This can be true but not always. Sometimes a person who is really depressed and who has decided to commit suicide comes across as fine because they think they have solved their problems by checking out.

However, I would question that someone close to them would not know. I would say that you wouldn't be very close to someone if they couldn't see that you were depressed.

As for the public persona perhaps people try to hide depression since it is often misunderstood by people and stigmatized.

I have struggled with depression my whole life and do not like to dump my problems on people. A lot of people don't understand what depression is like and how it affects your whole life.

I guess for someone who has not been at dark places, the warning signs can be almost invisible. Sometimes people give subtle hints... but then many of us are so stressed out with their own life that they don't notice...

I don't know about that. My husband is not sensitive like me but he always knows when I am depressed even if I don't tell him anything.

In fact someone on his side of the family actually committed suicide and we found it strange that the husband didn't know there was a problem. My husband even said he must not be that close to his wife to not know.

Some maybe hide their depression better than others but if you are around the person long enough then you would think you would catch on.

Yes, but thinking sometimes can be wrong. And as you mentioned not everyone is sensitive and those who suffer may try to hide it to not be a burden for those around them.

Sometimes you just can't see the obvious. Can be like a wife being the last person to know that her husbands cheats on her when everyone around knows. It is not the best example for sure...

You're right that is not the best example.

I get what you are saying. Not everyone wears their heart on their sleeve.

I get it that some don't want to burden others or don't want them to know.

Depression is stigmatized and not everyone understands it.
